Book Review: The Sacred Meal

Recently I obtained a copy of the book The Sacred Meal by Nora Gallagher for review. I was especially excited to read this book because I have been taken communion for quite some time. Miss Gallagher starts off by saying how communion is what stitches us together. This meaning that not just one denomination or country does it but it is done worldwide and therefore stitches us together. She does weave in some stories from the Bible but often focuses on her own experiences in serving communion and in her first time taking communion in a Catholic setting.  She also mostly gives personal stories and never really gets into the deeper meaning of communion.

When she finally really gets into it she divides it into waiting, receiving, and afterward. Watiting, for her, was waiting in line during a Catholic communion. For me it would be waiting in my pew while the little cups are passed. In waiting she discusses how people might look at what separates them from God (sin) and compares today to Sodom and Gomorrah. She also goes into thinking about the "bags" we carry such as greed, envy, and the likes and how waiting for communion helps her to see these bags that she carries.

In receiving she talks about how it brings you to the present and about opening your hands to receive the wafer. I could see where she was coming from but I don't open my hands since I am not Catholic. She talks about how opening your hands to heaven to recieve makes you vulnerable and how at the altar we are invited to what Jesus called heaven.

In the afterward she describes how communion reminds Christians of a meal taken by a man who wanted us to see the kingdom of heaven. She also describes it as exercising the muscle of your soul. She also describes how some people might get something simliar to a runner's high off of it and want to do it over and over and over.

So what is my opinion on the book? Well, it was ok. I like reading some of the stories. I was hoping for more Biblical support and maybe the breaking down of what happened in the Bible when Jesus actually had the last supper with his disciples. I guess I expected that when I was done reading this book I would actually have more historical and Biblical knowledge of the last supper and I don't really feel that I do.

I was given this book for free to review from booksneeze.com  All opnions are my own.

Happy Birthday, Mr. N!

                      Photobucket

So my third baby turns 8 years old today! N is such an amazing boy. He has always been a little spitfire even from before birth. The week before I actually gave birth to him I had false labor. Numerous times this boy was teasing me and making me think he was coming when, in fact, he wasn't. Such a little stinker! When the time finally came, it was Saturday, February 21st when I went into labor. I remember we had just gotten a new reclincer (a catnapper, which, by the way, has already bit this dust. It did so within 2yrs!) I was laying on it feeling all huge and so badly wanting to meet my new baby. We hadn't found out the gender with Nolan so that was a surprise as well! J's parent's were in to watch the other boys while I was at the hospital (and had been all week!) and were going to have to leave on Sunday to go back to work. I was feeling a little dumb at this point in time and went to bed.

About an hour later, at 11pm I was back downstairs. I said that I was having contractions and this time I knew they were the real thing. We went to the hospital and I was about 3cm along. UGH! I was hoping for at least 5. So on I labored and walked the halls of the hospital, pausing for contractions. Finally, I decided I couldn't take it anymore and opted for an epidural. The doc came in and began to prep me. Over and over he poked me with that HUGE needle and tried to insert the catheter and each time it would send shooting pains from my back down into the backs of my legs. Finally after and hour (yes an hour of active labor, and painful contractions, while being hunched over in a ball!) he said he couldn't try any more or I'd get a spinal headache. He wasn't sure what the problem was since I didn't have curvature of the spine or anything. I'd simply taken it as God did not want me to have it for whatever reason and told the doc it was fine but I might be saying bad things about him later, lol! (I didn't though. I'm pretty calm in labor!)

So I did my deep breathing and moaning and groaning, and finally my little surprise arrived at 5:03am. I was told it was a boy and through my tears I said, "I can't believe I am a mom to 3 boys!" He was perfectly healthy and began nursing like a champ right away. I am so proud of Nolan and the little boy he is. I know someday God will use his upbeat spirit and feistyness for Him. So Happy 8th Birthday, Nolan!

Here are some pics of N through the years (he is my most mischievious which is why in one he has powder on his face and another he has conditioner all over his head!):

This is one of my all time favorites of Nolan. He was 2 and it was his first time in the sprinklers!

This is the stuff God uses.

You know I think how often I am blessed. I do for sure, know I am blessed. Sometimes, though, all the little things add up and really start to get under my skin and I lose sight of what's important. You know those days too, right? The ones where your little one was up through the night because of his covers fell off, he had a bad dream, he's thirsty, he's cold, he's hot. Then as you sleepily drag yourself out of bed in the morning before the sun rises (at least I do!) your youngest is up 30 minutes later at least an hour before he normally wakes up. Not only that but he is a bear. Completely! Now you are trying to read your Bible in the midst of Mr. Grumpy crying and rubbing his eyes because you know he's still tired but refuses to go back to sleep.

Then something interupts your plans. Whatever your plans may be something happens to divert them. Then you realize your phone is missing and the last time you saw it was in the hands of your 3yr old. (I seriously can't even count how many times I've lost my phone and J will attest to that!) It seems as though all the little things add up. I've been trying to see the good in these "interuptions". Trying to look at them as being God ordained. Something He's using to mold and make me into what he wants me to be. I don't always get it right but I am thankful that God is still working in me and shaping into who he wants me to be.

I know this is the stuff He uses. The every day that I see as not mattering or interupting, or that no one sees, He uses to create me into who He wants me to be. That is someone more patient, kind, loving and more like Jesus!

Valentine's Day!

So, yeah, V day is an overcommercialized holiday in America, but I still like letting my hubby know in extra special ways how much I love him and this day gives me a chance to do so. Being that he is the breadwinner I don't often have a lot of cash flow to purchase a gift. Plus I was racking my brain thinking about what I could get him that would be meaningful and I couldn't think of anything that would convey that. So, I wrote him a love letter. I sat down and typed out all the amazing ways I love him and what a wonderful hubby and father he is.

I was actually nervous to give it to him for fear he would think it was totally dumb or lame. Well, quite the opposite happened. He put it in his underwear drawer! Now this is quite meaningful because anything that is of value to him that he doesn't want the boys to get ahold of goes in his underwear drawer. He told me he loved it and I am so glad he did! It was such a simple way to let him know how much he means to me!
Happy Valentine's day everyone!

Update on my gram and on me!

Well, the MRI on Monday produced no conclusive results for my gram. They know there is a mass and they know that it's grown there since her last scan a year ago. They still aren't sure what it is but she has another appointment tomorrow so hopefully some answers will come with that!

And I went to the doctor today for some suspicious moles on my back. I know one is considered large since it's larger than a pencil eraser. J said the borders looked irregular so I went to get it checked and the nurse practitioner agreed. Because of that and the fact that I have 4 more in a cluster around it and my past use of tanning beds (I was a hairdresser and got free use! Not anymore though.) she thought I should see a dermatologist and get it checked out. So I made an appointment and the soonest was April 7th! I am not super concerned because it has been there for years but there is still a small hint of nervousness especially since J's dad had melanoma. I've been a bit more vigilant in keep track of my moles. This mole is hard to keep track of though, because it's right in between my shoulder blades. I can't exactly look at it closely. Hopefully I'll get good news at the docs office in a couple of months.

So there are the updates!

Praying for and a tribute to my grandma.

So as of recently I've had a lot on mind. Not that I usually walk around with nothing on my mind but the past week has been different. Last week a mass was found on my gram's brain. For those of you who read my post about my father in law when I was doing the relay for life (which I will be starting up again soon! This time with my hubby.) You know that he passed away from a brain tumor. When the initial CAT scan was read the doctor wasn't sure and it could've been scar tissue from a procedure she had to have done for AVM. So I tried not to freak out. Wednesday night my gram called and asked me to pray as she was going to the neurologist yesterday morning. I said I would and I have been praying. Then she asked me to pray that nothing could be done by the doctor. She quickly added, "If it's scar tissue then there is nothing that can be done anyway," but I can't help but wonder if she meant pray that there's nothing that can be done no matter what. I should've asked for clarity. I don't want to pray that way. I don't want to lose my grandma.

The neurologist (and for my family you can correct me if this is wrong. I'm going by what my sister told me) thinks it may just be cancer. He's not 100% positive until her MRI on Monday. He thinks it may have to do with breast cancer that she had, I think, over a decade ago now. That cancer was removed, successfully. I am just...a mess. I will call my gram later today, but in the meantime I am having a hard time honoring her request. I have seen what brain tumors can do to a person and at that time I never thought I would have to see it again and I was glad about that!

And I am guilty of not seeing my gram enough. Taking people for granted is so easy to do. You just go on and live your life so sure you and your loved ones will be around another day to call, to talk, to see, but that is just not the case. I used to visit her almost daily until I moved. Then having more children and living further away were my excuses. Now I just wish I would've loaded up and headed down to visit the woman who has made such a HUGE impact on my life as a mother, as a wife, and as a child of God. Had it not been for her I wouldn't be where I am. She introduced me to my hubby and more importantly she introduced me to Christ at a time when I was heading in the wrong direction. I always hoped that she knew how much she meant to me and how much she and my grandfather greatly affected my life for the good. The time they took with me, praying for me and being there for me. But I need to tell her. I want her to KNOW. I know she misses my grandfather terribly. More so than I ever could as over 50yrs of marriage would definitely do that.

So I am scared and I am praying. Praying for God's will and peace.
